Body Slimming Treatments Explained: Non-Surgical Body Contouring and Fat Reduction Options

Why body slimming is so confusing
Search "body slimming treatment" or "slimming near me" and you get a wall of machines, brand names, before-and-after photos, and promises. Lasers. Cold. Heat. Ultrasound. Muscle stimulation. Shots. Wraps. Programs. Most pages are written to sell one of them, so it is hard to tell what each one actually does or whether it fits your goal.
This guide sorts it out. We describe each category of non-surgical body contouring by what it is and what it is generally used for, without brand names, so you can compare your treatment options on substance. Then we tell you plainly which ones we offer at our Flint clinic and which ones we do not.
One thing to know before you read further: most body slimming treatments are cosmetic treatments aimed at inch loss in a specific area of the body, not weight loss. That distinction explains most of the disappointment people feel after spending money on them.
Inch loss vs. weight loss
Weight loss is a lower number on the scale. When it comes from fat loss, it affects your whole body, including visceral fat, the deeper fat around your organs that is most closely tied to health risks like type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
Inch loss is a smaller measurement around a specific treatment area, like your abdomen or thighs. It can happen with or without much change on the scale.
Body fat comes in two main layers. Subcutaneous fat sits just under the skin; it is the soft, pinchable layer that forms stubborn pockets of fat on the belly, hips, and thighs. Visceral fat sits deeper, around the organs. Almost every device-based body slimming treatment works on the subcutaneous layer in a targeted area. None of them is a substitute for weight loss, and none of them reaches visceral fat. If your goal is better health, or you have significant weight to lose, your overall body composition matters more than any single measurement.
That is not a knock on body slimming. It is just matching the tool to the job.
What is non-surgical body contouring?
Body contouring is any treatment meant to change the shape of an area of the body. Surgical body contouring, such as liposuction or a tummy tuck, is a surgical procedure that uses anesthesia and an incision to remove fat or skin, followed by recovery time.
Non-surgical body contouring, sometimes called non-invasive body contouring or body sculpting, aims to reduce fat or circumference without surgery. There is no incision and usually little or no downtime. In exchange, the changes are more modest than surgery, many treatments require multiple treatments to see a difference, and for some the result is temporary.
Non-surgical fat reduction is generally meant for people who are at or near a healthy weight and want to sculpt a few stubborn areas. It is not meant to treat obesity or replace diet and exercise.
The main types of body slimming treatments
Light therapy and laser fat reduction
These use specific wavelengths of light aimed at the treatment area. There are two broad types.
- Low-level light therapy. These use red or near-infrared laser light that does not cut or burn the skin, a process often called photobiomodulation. Rather than destroying fat cells, the light is described as prompting fat cells to release some of their stored lipids. Devices in this group are generally used for temporary reduction of circumference in areas like the waist, hips, and thighs. Sessions are typically short, with no needles and no downtime.
- Higher-energy laser fat treatments. Some devices use laser energy to heat the fat under the skin with the goal of damaging fat cells in the treatment area. These are a different kind of treatment, with different effects, sensations, and clearances.
The phrase "laser lipo" gets used for both, but neither is liposuction, which is surgery.
Fat freezing (cold-based fat reduction)
Cold-based treatments, sometimes called fat freezing or cryolipolysis, apply controlled cooling to a pinchable fat bulge. The idea is that fat cells are more sensitive to cold than the skin and tissue around them, so the treatment aims to freeze fat cells while sparing the skin. Results generally develop over weeks to months as the body clears the damaged fat cells. These treatments are typically used on smaller, well-defined fat deposits, and like any procedure they carry possible side effects worth discussing with a provider.
Radiofrequency treatments
Radiofrequency devices deliver energy that heats the skin and fat beneath it. They are commonly used for skin tightening and collagen support, and some are also marketed to reduce fat or improve the look of cellulite. Sessions usually feel warm, and results vary by device and area.
Ultrasound fat reduction treatments
Focused ultrasound devices aim sound energy at the fat layer under the skin. Some are designed to break down fat cells in a targeted area, after which the body processes the treated fat over time. Like other devices, they are generally used on specific areas rather than for overall fat loss.
Muscle stimulation
These devices cause strong, repeated muscle contractions, far more than you could do voluntarily. They are generally aimed at muscle tone and definition in areas such as the abdomen or buttocks. Building or toning muscle is a real benefit, but it is a different goal than fat reduction.
Injections
"Slimming injections" is a loose term that covers very different things, which is why it causes so much confusion.
- Prescription weight loss injections are medications prescribed and monitored by a medical provider as part of a supervised program. They work on appetite and overall weight, not on one spot.
- Lipotropic and vitamin B12 injections, often called "skinny shots," typically combine compounds such as methionine, inositol, and choline, often with B12. They are not FDA-approved weight loss drugs, and the evidence that they cause weight loss on their own is limited. B12 corrects a deficiency, and people who are low in it often feel more energy once it is corrected.
- Injectable fat reduction treatments for small areas, such as submental fat under the chin, are a separate category of prescription treatment designed to destroy fat cells where injected, with their own approvals and side effects.
Wraps and sweat-based treatments
Body wraps, heat suits, and similar treatments can make you look and measure smaller for a short time, mostly by shifting water. That change is temporary and is not fat loss.
Medically supervised weight loss
This category is different from everything above, because it addresses overall body fat, including visceral fat. A provider reviews your health history and medications, builds a plan around eating, activity, and habits, and may include prescription medication when it is appropriate. It takes longer than a single session, but it is the option that changes your health picture, not just a measurement.
Do body slimming treatments work?
They can, for the right goal. Many non-surgical treatments produce a measurable reduction in fat or circumference in the treated area. What they do not do is replace weight loss, reshape your whole body, or guarantee a permanent result. How well a treatment works for you depends on the device, the area, your starting point, and what you do between and after sessions.
The best results tend to come when body contouring is combined with diet and exercise or a structured weight loss program, so the habits support the change instead of working against it. Individual results vary.
Body slimming treatments we offer at Body Trim, and what we do not
At Body Trim Weight Loss Clinic, our body slimming services are built around measuring real change and being straight about what each treatment does.
Invisa-RED laser body contouring. Invisa-RED is a low-level, light-based treatment. It is FDA-cleared (not FDA-approved; more on that below) for the temporary reduction of waist, hip, and thigh circumference. It uses red and near-infrared laser light through paddles positioned near the skin, with no surgery, no needles, and no downtime. Sessions take about 20 minutes at our Flint clinic. It is not a weight loss treatment and does not permanently remove fat. Results tend to hold up better alongside the habits from a weight loss program, and individual results vary. For more on the belly specifically, read non-surgical belly fat reduction in Flint.
Physician-supervised weight loss. Our weight loss program includes prescription weight loss injections when they are right for you, a real-food eating plan, and regular check-ins. Provider visits happen by telemedicine, so most of the program happens from home.
Lipotropic and B12 injections. We offer both as an add-on inside a supervised program, decided with your provider. We are honest about them: they do not burn or melt fat on their own. Ask about them at your consultation.
Styku 3D body scanning. Styku is how we measure. You stand on a turntable for about 35 seconds while harmless infrared light builds a 3D model. It records circumferences and an estimate of body fat percentage, so you can compare your own scans over time on the same scanner. See why that matters in 3D body scan vs. the scale.
What we do not offer. We no longer offer cold-based fat freezing; that service was discontinued. We also do not offer radiofrequency, ultrasound, muscle stimulation devices, injectable fat reduction, wraps, or liposuction. If one of those is what you want, a different provider is the right fit, and we will tell you so.

FDA-cleared vs. FDA-approved
These two phrases sound alike and mean different things, and body slimming marketing blurs them constantly.
FDA-cleared usually means a medical device went through the FDA's 510(k) process and was found substantially equivalent to a device already on the market, for a specific stated use. The clearance covers that use only.
FDA-approved is a different and stricter pathway, used for drugs and for higher-risk devices.
Most body contouring devices are cleared, not approved. That is normal. What matters is whether a clinic is honest about it and whether the claims match the cleared use. For example, the invisa-RED ELITE device was cleared in August 2020 (510(k) number K192275) for temporary reduction of waist, hip, and thigh circumference. That is what we tell patients it does.
How to choose a body slimming clinic
Whether you choose us or someone else, these questions will protect your time and money.
- What is the name of the device? A body slimming clinic should tell you exactly what it uses.
- Is it FDA-cleared, and for what? Ask for the clearance and the specific indication. You can look up a 510(k) number on the FDA's public database yourself. Be cautious with anyone who says "FDA-approved" for a body contouring device, or who claims their machine beats every other option.
- What will you measure, and how? A tape measure held a little differently each time is not great evidence. Ask whether they scan or measure the same way before and after.
- What is the total cost? Ask for the full plan price, not the price of one session, and what happens if you need more.
- Who supervises it? If weight loss is part of your goal, ask whether a medical provider is involved and how often you will talk to them.
- What happens after? Inch loss from many treatments is temporary. Ask what the clinic does to help you keep results.
- Who is not a good candidate? A trustworthy clinic will tell some people a treatment is not right for them, for example during pregnancy or with certain health conditions.
Which body slimming option fits you?
A rough guide:
- You are close to your goal and have one stubborn area. A non-surgical treatment aimed at inch loss may be worth a conversation.
- You have significant weight to lose, or health concerns tied to weight. Start with a medically supervised program. Contouring can come later, once the remaining fat is the stubborn kind.
- You are not sure. Measure first. A body composition scan shows where you actually stand, which takes the guessing out of choosing the right treatment.
Common questions
What is the best body slimming treatment?
It depends on the goal. For overall fat loss and health, a medically supervised weight loss program addresses the most. For temporary inch loss in a specific area, a body contouring treatment may help. No single treatment does both.
Is body slimming the same as weight loss?
No. Most body slimming treatments are designed for inch loss in a targeted area. The scale may not change much.
How long do body slimming results last?
It depends on the treatment. For the one we offer, the cleared result is temporary. Keeping results depends on the habits around the treatment, and individual results vary.
Is there recovery time?
Most non-surgical treatments have little or no downtime. Invisa-RED has none; most people go straight back to work or errands. Other categories can involve temporary redness, swelling, or soreness, so ask about side effects for any treatment you consider.
Do skinny shots work?
Lipotropic and B12 injections are not FDA-approved weight loss drugs and do not melt fat on their own. B12 helps people who are deficient. We offer them as an add-on inside a supervised program, decided with your provider.
How much does body slimming cost?
It varies widely by treatment, area, and number of sessions. At our clinic, Invisa-RED is quoted at your consultation, and Styku scans are priced separately and quoted before you decide. For more, see how much does Invisa-RED cost.
Do you still offer fat freezing?
No. Cold-based fat freezing was discontinued at Body Trim. Our in-clinic body contouring service today is Invisa-RED.
